Riverside Average

Kind of a busy day at Riverside tonight, so I hooked up with a guy named James who I had played with once before last fall, since we were a couple of back to back singles on a course crowded with twosomes and foursomes. A nice guy, with a heck of an arm, and we compared notes on different courses we've played etc etc. I played pretty much average today, missed a few easy putts, but also had my fair share of nice long sinkers to make up for it. Heel is starting to ache a bit more, to the point where I notice it while I'm still playing (before, I'd only notice it hurting after the round was finished). I need to get better shoes, or get this looked at or something, it is getting a bit bothersome.

I played 15, but skipped 16 due to high water and a fisherman on the fairway, and we subbed a disc off of unofficial 'hole 19'.

Sweaty round at Johnson

With the heavy rains from the night before, I headed to Johnson to try and find a 'dry course', and, aside from a few puddles in some of the tee boxes, it was a pretty nice round. I had the course to myself, except for a few 'ball golfers' hitting a few off of the big hill (I don't know how they found their golf balls when they were done, it is sometimes hard enough finding a disc in this high grass). The wildflowers were in full bloom, so the course was also a treat to look at. I played the front nine pretty good, shooting even par with one bogey and one birdie to even things out. Had a bit more of a struggle on the back nine, overshooting 13 nearly to the road and then bushwacking through the trees to get back to the pole, and then I managed to keep 14 down to a bogey (which is usually good for me). Shot six over par on the back 9 to give me a respectable 60 for the round. (44.5)

Return to Newaygo

The three of us drove up to Newaygo on Sunday, the first time for Keenan at this course (and his first round of the year, believe it or not), and the 2nd visit for me and Terri. I managed to shave two strokes off my last round's score, and Terri and Keenan both tied front and back to end up with matching 82s for the day. A little more challenging once the trees started filling in, but I was impressed by how little the course interferes with the campground considering how close you sometimes are to it. Not too crowded even with it being full of campers, and holiday revelers. This course seems to still be one of the better kept secrets in western michigan.

Worst times to try and play Riverside

Duh. I should've anticipated the fact, that, being Memorial Day weekend, there would be lots of picnickers on the back 9. Anyways, I had a real good round going, and a was a bit disappointed that I not only had to skip 13, 14, (and then passed by 15 & 16 due to the mud I encountered the day before), but I also had to skip 17 & 18 due to a huge family reunion. I ended up playing two discs off of 1, 2 & 3 to complete my 18. A fairly good score today, but I would have preferred to have challenged the entire course the way I was playing today.

The Real Article

Played the entire course at Riverside today (and probably shouldn't have). Had a total meltdown on the first hole, and spent the rest of the round in a piss poor mood, just trying to dig myself out of the hole I put myself in. To be fair, I had a number of good drives today, several nice approach shots, and several long putts that 'just missed going in', so it wasn't all bad. But on the 16th hole I managed to put my 'Red Roadrunner' into the pond, and with the high water levels, there is no way I'm going in after it. Gonna miss that disc, it had a peculiar tendency to fade slightly right, which made it handy on two or three holes at Riverside, and several holes at Johnson. I'm either going to have to promote another disc from the bullpen, or go out and try and find a suitable replacement at Spinski's. Also, I'm thinking of giving all my discs a good bath and scrubbing - they need to have all the flop sweat washed off of them after a round like todays.

Riverside Threesome

After a long hiatus, and it being a beautiful sunny day, I called up the Laytons to see if they wanted to meet at Riverside for a round. 15 & 16 still too muddy to play, but getting real close. There was some sort of bike thingamajig going on which made parking a bit of a mess, and there was also league night for the Dogs of Disc, but overall, neither really slowed down play very much. Megan only played the front 9 and then followed us around the rest, and me and Greg substituted a repeat of 1 & 2 for the skipped holes. Greg had a nice birdie on 18 today, and ended up beating me by 3 strokes. We had matched the first six holes shot for shot, and then I made some offhand remark about 'somebody needs to start making mistakes', and sure it enough, it ended up being me. About my only highlight today was a nice rare par on hole 14.

Be it ever so muddy, there's no place like home

Took another trip down to Riverside this evening after Terri left for her rehearsal. Cloudy and overcast, which wasn't bad because it cleared the park out fairly well, and I had the course nearly to myself. Little to no wind to speak of, and only a slight drizzle from time to time. I had one my better rounds today, although I had to skip holes 15 & 16 due to flooding (almost playable, but very very muddy).

Crowded day at Brewer

Went down to play 36 at Brewer this afternoon. Should have left much earlier in the day. With unemployment as high as it is currently, I have a feeling that Brewer is going to be like this all summer on days as beautiful as this. A lot of large groups, 9somes, 6somes, and slow foursomes throughout the course. Gold and Red weren't too bad, but White and Blue were ridiculous today. I ended up bailing after 27 and didn't bother to play Blue. A shame because I wasn't playing half bad today. (the score doesn't really reflect it, but I was feeling a lot better about a lot of my shots today, both off the tee as well as putt and approach shots. Still a bit muddy on Gold, but the course is drying up nicely overall.

Ended up shooting dead-on average scores for Gold and White, but either tied or set a new personal record for Red.

Jumping the Gun at Riverside

A bit too eager to play my home course today, it really needs about another week of dry weather to be ready for prime time. Very muddy, several holes had to skip either because of the tee or area surrounding the basket still having standing water. No good footing anywhere, which didn't make for enjoyable play, not to mention the breeze off the river, and just being totally out of whack today. I ended up playing two discs off of the 9th hole to make up for #1, and then 4 discs each off of #17 & #18 to make up for most of the back 9 (big lake on 10, flooding on 12,13,14,15 & 16).

Mother's Day at Johnson

While Terri was away with Candy buying flowers in Allendale, I shot down to Johnson for a solo round. Originally planned on playing 36, but I had passed a slow group earlier in my round, and another was just about to start as I finished up on 18, so I decided to call it a day. Had a horrible start, with a triple bogey on the first hole, and then was basically playing catch-up the rest of the round. Of course, it ended up that, if I hadn't screwed up that first hole, I would have had a pretty decent round today. A couple birdies (one of which looked like it may have been close to an ace), and a decent score on hole 14 (actually had the pole in sight for my third shot for a change) made the rest of the round fairly nice. Afterwards, me and missus headed over to the movies to catch the new Star Trek picture (it was ok).

Oh, and according to dgcoursereview.com I've just passed the 400 mile mark in disc throwing (at least in regards to courses I've played that have their yardages recorded).

And these two birdies today mark my 50th and 51st birdies here at Johnson.

Brewer easy 18

Me and the little lady drove down to Brewer this afternoon for an afternoon round. Still a bit muddy here and there, and we only played the two easiest 9s (Terri not feeling well, must be the swine flu). We each got a birdie at some point, and each had our share of #%&@ double and triple bogeys (well, I was the only one with a triple). Terri picked up her birdie on the first hole on Blue, after soaking up some good dog mojo from a passing boxer puppy.

Muckin' around at McGraft

Spent most of the day puttering around on the boat, fixing this 'n that, and stopped by McGraft Park for a quick solo round before heading home. Kind of cool when you haven't played a course in a while, and you can actually see improvements in your game. Several holes seemed a lot easier to me than they had in the past, and I found myself actually outdriving a few of them, and got a few birdies on holes that I've never birdied before. Those holes down by the river haven't gotten any easier though, and that's where I piled up most of my extra strokes today. Nice new signs have been put in, and a few of them had yardage on them, but not all.

Johnson again

Another beautiful day, and the river still high, so went down to Johnson for a solo round. Didn't feel like I was playing all that well today, but the score wasn't all that bad, so I must've been making at least a few decent shots here and there (and rare pars on the last two holes didn't hurt). I was probably very discouraged by following up a nice birdie on the 5th hole with a stupid double bogey on the 6th (usually an easy hole for me).

Not very crowded today, but saw a couple of disc girlies as I was teeing up on 18 (a rare sight, gals who haven't been dragged out to the course by their boyfriends/husbands).

Newaygo Scouting Report

Me and the Missus drove up to Newaygo this beautiful sunny afternoon to give the Newaygo State Park disc golf course a look-see. Deceptively easy looking at first, but gradually gets more challenging as the course progresses. Tight and technical, but not ridiculously so, the course is scenic and well manicured, and runs along the lake at several points. The course meanders around several campsites, so it would be a nice camping/disc golf destination, and may introduce new players to the game (wouldn't it be nice, Terri was saying today, if all Michigan state parks installed a disc golf course like this? - hey, I'd pay for the yearly pass if they did). We both started out fairly nice with several pars and bogies, but eventually the course got the better of us as the technical challenges manifested themselves, and several double and triple bogeys became more the norm. We ended up tying the game on the very last hole, when I had a two stroke lead, and then blew it on a triple bogey, while Terri played the rather difficult hole well, and kept to a single bogey. Nice new baskets, nice big cement tee pads, lots of signage, and pointers to the next holes. Would definitely come back here again (close enough to Fremont to hit both in one day).

Frolic at Fallasburg

Called up Greg Saturday morning to see if he wanted to join me for a round at Fallasburg. His first visit, and he managed a better score than my first visit to this park. He had a beautiful drive on one of the holes on the front 9, and we both thought we were going to see his first ace, but it ended up missing by inches and going past the basket by about 20 feet. Other than a large group with kids that were ahead of us for the first 5 holes, we had the course to ourselves for the most part. I had a fairly decent back 9, with several par runs, and ended up with my best score yet on the 'pro tees'. I neglected to bring along a score book, so I'll have to wait for Greg to email me the scores before I can post them here.

Johnson 36 pack

River levels continue to rise (the first basket at Riverside is almost completely underwater), and, with another 'free day' and semi-reasonable weather, I headed down to the only dry course in Grand Rapids for a couple back to back solo rounds. Nothing spectacular on either one, aside from a near miss ace on the 6th hole on the second go-round (I mean, it must've missed by mere inches). Very quiet out at Johnson today, I had the place to myself (aside from some people just 'chillin' in the parking lot), and there was a little bit of a breeze out there today, but it only interfered with a few shots here and there.
