Window of Sunshine

The river is WAY over the banks now, so we took advantage of a brief sunshine window of opportunity to drive down and play Johnson this afternoon. Beautiful sunny day, and there were lots of dogs down at the park today, so unfortunately, Lady had to spend a lot of time on her leash. Neither of us played all that spectacularly today, but there were a few nice shots here and there from both of us.

We found our first 'disc find' of the year, 3/4 buried in the sand pit on hole 16, a well worn KC Pro Whippet with a big swastika sharpied on the back.

Old Farm Windy Twosome

After checking out a tenor sax for sale down on the south side of town (it wasn't anything special, so we passed on it), me and Terri drove down to Old Farm for a quick 18 before dinner. The wind was quite gusty at times, but really didn't affect our play all that much. Terri had several good drives today, but had some bad luck with trees on several holes, and had a lot of unfortunate freaky approach shots that hit near the basket, and then rolled a long ways in the wrong direction. I seemed to be living the clean life, and managed 3 birdies and matching 28's on the front and back 9. Afterwards, we shared a pizza and beer at Old Chicago, and caught 'Gran Torino' at the cheap movies (good movie, highly recommended if you haven't seen it yet).

Johnson Solo Outing

A long day of work today, with very little sleep the night before, but with the sun shining in the late afternoon, I decided to reward myself with a round of golf, despite being dog tired. I almost instantly regretted it after my first shot on hole 1, where I sent my drive deep into the woods on the left, and nearly sent it down into the chasm beyond the 'no trespassing' signs (caught on the lip, thankfully). After a nasty 5 on the first hole, and then a beautiful drive on 2 ruined by sloppy putting, put me 3 strokes to the bad right out of the starting gate. I swiftly put my house in order and managed to chip away at the score thanks to two back to back birdies on hole 5 & 6. At the turn I found myself 3 over par, and then proceeded to play the back nine fairly well, with a rare 4 on hole 14, and several beautiful drives on hole 12, 15, & 17. In fact, I had several really nice drives today, but combinations of sloppy putting, and/or freak rolling disc mishaps kept me from capitalizing on most of them. Came away with a 60 today, and that is 10 strokes better than my last visit, so I went home content, and will likely sleep well tonight.

Fallasburg Saturday Drive

Me and the Mrs. drove out to Lowell this afternoon to give Fallasburg another try. This would be the third trip out there for me, and Terri's second. We decided to brave the pro tees this time, which led to some very high scores. I managed a single birdie, and ended on a couple of back to back pars, so I didn't feel to badly mistreated at the end. Terri nearly lost her beloved 'rusty' disc in the woods on the back nine when she tried playing a hole and talking on the cell phone to the boy at the same time, but luckily she managed to stumble across it just before we were about to give up (and then we got involved in searching for someone else's purple disc on the same hole). More sunshine on top of what I already had from the day before, so I am pretty well beat. (I can only imagine what Greg is going through down in Cinci - he originally asked me to go along with him - driving down at 2 in the morning and trying to play 5 courses and then driving home - yikes)

Overdoing the Sunshine Enjoyment Thing

Decided to take the afternoon off today and ride my (well, actually Keenan's) bike down to Johnson. Had ambitious plans of playing 36 holes once I got there, but I barely had enough juice in the tank to play 18 effectively. My legs felt like rubber and I had a hard time mustering up any mojo for my throwing arm from the very first hole onward, and by the time I slowly slogged up the hill on 14 I had officially decided that 18 holes was more than enough, if I had any hope of making it back home again. Shot an embarrassing 70, playing most holes like it was the first time I'd ever played the course, hitting trees right and left, approach shots that don't even come close, and putts that miss by a foot. About the only highlights were a couple of beautiful long drives on 13 and then on 18 (which I then flubbed up the approach and putts since there was some guy taking a picnic lunch break right in the fairway, and seemingly deaf to my cries of 'heads up', 'hey there, lookout', that is, until the disc landed nearby him). Another unfortunate bit of news from today's adventure, somewhere between here and Johnson I managed to drop my cell phone. I'll post the score here, when I can get up enough energy to stumble down to my bag to retrieve my scorecard.

ADDENDUM: Thankfully, someone found my cell phone and called up my Dad in Arizona to tell him about it. After Dad called me, I called my cell # and somehow it managed to cross the river into Wyoming and ended up at a local High School, where I will pick it up at the office on Monday.

Down by the River Side

After a full day of work, and driving out to Muskegon to take the cover off the boat, and cleaning out the garage, I called up Greg to see if he wanted to meet up and give Riverside a try, since it looked as if most of it was starting to dry up. I got there about 45 minutes early and played 9 holes on my own, and then took a quick walk around the rest of the park to get back to the parking lot by 6:15. The park was pretty busy tonight, but most people were pretty good about letting faster groups play through. Greg fell behind by two strokes on the front 9, and then fell behind by 3 more on the next two holes, and then got one back on the 12th. Since there was a large group, and a traffic backup on the 13th hole, we decided to skip 13,14,15 & 16 and make them up somehow on the south course. The rest of the round we matched each other basically shot for shot. Still some water on a few of the holes, making them unplayable (15 & 16 mostly), and several patches of standing water on the south course make several holes on the back 9 problematic as well. A few more days of sunny weather like today, and it should dry up pretty soon.

Johnson Poles are IN

Me and Terri went down to Johnson this afternoon to enjoy the beautiful sunny afternoon, and we both had crackerjack rounds. We tied the front nine at 28 apiece, and I managed another 28 on the back nine for a 56. Terri took over 10 strokes off her last visit here for a 66. The poles are now all in, and it looks like someone may have mowed the fairways. Disc Golf season is now officially under way.

Easter Baskets

After our Ham and Deviled Eggs at Candy's place, we drove down to Jaycee Park in Kentwood for a round of golf. A nice relaxing round, and helped us work off the extra helpings and easter basket chocolate on a beautiful sunny afternoon. Jaycee wasn't all that crowded, and there was a lot more sunshine than I expected, since the trees haven't quite filled out yet.

Klutch Komeback vs the Kansas City Kid

Called up Greg Saturday afternoon to see if he wanted to brave Johnson (of course he didn't), and we settled on his home turf of Lamar instead. For the front nine I wasn't playing all that bad, but not particularly well, either, and Greg had brought his 'A game', and took the front 9 by a stroke. Megan bowed out of the 2nd 9, and me and Greg set off again around the horn for the decisive round. By the 11th, I was down by three strokes, but I managed to come back on a lucky hole 12 (where a wayward shot turned into a fortunate roller that put me next to the basket for a birdie), and a conservatively played 13 where the score tied up and remained so up to the last hole (we even managed to both shoot a 4 on hole 16(7), which is usually where somebody stumbles). It came down to the last hole, where I had a nice drive around the pond, taking the short route, and Greg shanked it into the trees (not too bad, bouncing back out in the open). Greg's 2nd shot was a worm burner that came up short, giving me an opportunity, if I could make a decent approach shot. Unfortunately, my approach went long and wide, and I ended up about 30 feet to the left and beyond the basket. Greg's next approach shot was better, leaving him a long but makeable putt. Amazingly, I managed to sink my putt for par, and walk away with a 2 stroke lead after Greg flubbed his putt. A fun round, a little chilly by the time the sun was starting to sink, but a beautiful spring weekend. Hoping to go out again sometime in the afternoon with Terri and Candy (maybe Old Farm).

Brewer Mental Health Day

After a busy couple of months, I took the afternoon off today for a 'mental health' outing, and played 36 down at Brewer. The wind was ridiculously strong today, and it shows on the scorecard. Red and Gold had a lot of 4s and 5s, and I played much better on the White and Blue (that is, except for the few holes that are out in the breeze).

total for 36 today was 126

Johnson Threesome

Me, Terri and the dog took advantage of a beautiful sunny afternoon and played a round at Johnson. Terri played a little better than our last visit, and I played a little worse. Lady had about the same amount of fun. The wind was a bit stronger than our last visit, but at least we didn't have to contend with a 'movie set' this time.

And with this round, according to Disc Golf Course Review, Terri has just passed the 100 mile mark.

Johnson Twosome

Me, Terri and Lady headed down to Johnson this afternoon to take advantage of the last predicted sunshine and warm weather for the coming week. Still no posts up here, and there was a student film crew shooting what looked like a 'police crime scene' on the hill (taking up the 5th hole and the tee for the 6th), so we had to skip them until later in the round (by the time we finished 15, they had cleared out). Lady had a good time, and was dog tired on the ride home (I was actually getting better drives today with her wet sloppy Kong frisbee than I was on my own shots). Terri did pretty well on the front nine, but you could tell she was getting a little tired by the back, dropping almost ten strokes to me on holes 10-18. I played fairly sloppy today, totally messing up the 14th hole after a beautiful drive by taking an excursion through the woods on the way to the pole.

Riverside after even more rain

Went down to Riverside in the late afternoon to take advantage of what looked like a brief window of sunshine. It was deceiving however, as it was very chilly, very windy, and the previous night's rains had left the park even more soggy than the day before. Many of the tee pads were underwater, and a lot more standing water here and there on the fairways. Amazingly, I started off the front nine pretty nicely, despite the high winds and wet conditions, shooting a 29 (a 28 was ruined by gusts of wind off the river on the 9th hole which sent my disc comically awry and off course on two of my shots). After struggling with the wind on 10 and 11, I didn't want to risk 12 and 13 or 14 with the high pond levels, so I skipped most of the back nine and made up for it on the last two holes.

One to Burn

I guess I'm not as conversant in disc golf terminology as I had thought. Went down to Riverside around 5:45 to play a quick solo round before dinner, and quickly caught up with another player on the 3rd hole, who looked like he was waiting for me to let me play through. I made my throw, and then the guy asked me "if I had one to burn". Huh? Does he want me to throw another disc? Borrow a disc?

Duh, should've known. Wanted to know if I had a 'doob' on me. It goes without saying that disc golf and marijuana go together like peanut butter and jelly.

Anyhow, continued on with my round, sans 'one to burn'. Aside from a single stumble on the 4th hole (probably still thinking about that 'doob' I didn't smoke), I played pretty well, a lot of pars, and a decent score of 60 by the final tally.

The recent rains have raised up the river levels again, so that 15 and 16 are now under water and unplayable, so I substituted 2 discs off of 17 and 18 to make up for it.
