Late Season Discing

Drove down to Riverside this afternoon since the weather was so nice and played a solo round. Drives and approaches were pretty erratic today, but decent putting surely saved my butt on several occasions. Lost two more discs to the damn Riverside pond, an old approach disc on 15 and then a tie dyed driver on 16 (one those that was turning into one of my 'go to' discs for anhyzer shots, which of course didn't do it this time).

Autumn at Riverside

Greg called up in the afternoon and suggested we meet at Riverside for a round. Haven't played here in I don't remember how long, but I didn't do nearly as bad as I was expecting, considering how rusty I've been. Managed to lead by a stroke at the turn, but then quickly fell behind by 3 thanks to a lot of bogeys on the back side. Came back to have a tie sewn up on the last hole, but then blew an easy putt to let Greg take the round by a stroke.

Pathetically Out of Shape Johnson Slogfest

What is that bright thing in the sky? It Burns, IT BURNS!

Not exactly warm out, but after the past few weeks, I'll take sunny at least. Been a sorry year for both discing and sailing. What with the weather, extracurricular activities, and several time consuming work projects, there hasn't been much time to go outside and enjoy the great outdoors this year. So when I managed to get my work done by 2pm today, and saw that the sun was shining, I decided to head down to Johnson for a long overdue disc afternoon.

Hoo-boy am I rusty. Was already turning the air blue with cursing by the second hole, and was huffing and puffing from exertion by the fifth. Barely even registered how nice the weather was, or how nice the course was (freshly mowed), I was so preoccupied with how badly even the easiest holes were going for me. Had a brief feeling of control and competence around the 9-10-11th holes, but that quickly went out the window never to be seen again. Need to get back out on a regular basis again, this is ridiculous.

Brewer 36

Slow work day, so I drove down to Brewer for a solo 36. Weather was overcast but muggy and warm, and started drizzling on me by the last 9. Been a while since I've done 36 holes, got kind of wore out by the end. Drives were much better than I expected today, but other than that, I played pretty mediocre overall, and the last 9 (white) was about a total meltdown. One silver lining on this round today, found a Lime Green Discraft 'Stalker' on the fairway on one of the last holes on Gold, rather new, with no identifying marks. Still way behind on the lost/found ratio for this year, but every little bit helps.

Chewed up and Spit out by Johnson

Me, Terri and the dog went down to Johnson this afternoon. Hasn't been mowed much this year, so we spent an awful lot of time searching for discs in the tall grass. We were wore out by the 10th hole, and resembled the walking dead by the time we climbed over the hill to slowly, doggedly play the last three. I took this round by 11 strokes, but even so, it was one of my worst rounds of the year, seven strokes over my average for this course. What didn't help matters was a triple bogey on the usually easy 4th hole, and a trio of double bogeys on the back 9, including a disc caught halfway up a huge tree that Terri made a valiant attempt to climb for, but not before I managed to toss a large piece of deadwood up at the branch to dislodge it. I think even the dog was exhausted by the end, and we stopped for some well deserved dairy queen treats on the ride home.

Return to Saugatuck

Got done with work around 3:30 and in a mad desire to 'just get out of here and go do something', me and Terri drove down to Saugatuck to give the Dunes another try. Compared to last time, I did a little worse and Terri did a little better, with our usual M.O.'s (Terri starting strong but fading on the back nine, while I take a while to find my bearings and get stronger after I have a few holes under my belt). Will post the scores later when I get them from Terri's gizmo, but I think we ended up at 75 & 76 at the end of 18.

Tried to catch up with my Dad and/or my sister down in SH afterwards, but didn't have any luck finding them. We stopped at Crane's Pie Restaurant on the way home, which we had heard great things about. Dinner was pretty disappointing, but the pie was pretty good - probably not worth making the extra effort to go there again however.

Quickie in the Sticks

Hell week in the illustration biz - my life lately has turned into the following formula "wake, work, eat, work, work work work, eat, work work, sleep" (then repeat for the next day, and the next) - so finding time to play disc golf has been problematic at best.
Today Terri downloaded a 'golf scorekeeping' app for her iPod Touch, and we wanted to give it a try, so Friday around 6ish we headed down to play Riverside south for the first time this year (since we just didn't have the ambition for anything more challenging today, seeing as how I was nodding off to sleep on the front porch whilst playing my guitar).

Terri took an early lead around the 5th hole when I got in some trouble with the pond, and by the time we made the turn I found myself 3 strokes down, and then 4 down a few holes later. On the 14th hole I realized I better get my mojo working if I wanted to avoid a loss. I managed to get it down to a single stroke deficit by the 18th hole, and then tied it up with a beautiful putt for birdie for an even-steven 54 round with the wife. Beers and possibly the worst burger I've had in a long time at Cheers afterwards, and then an early bedtime to get back on the work treadmill tomorrow. Hoping to work like a dog all weekend to finally put this project behind me.
